Author Weaves MATTERS OF FAITH From Family Issues In Break-Through Novel
Author Kristy Kiernan takes her rapidly growing legion of readers…as well as her characters…through daily life situations. That’s why she can connect so well with her readers.
It’s never more evident than in her new novel MATTERS OF FAITH (Penguin Berkley, August release). Kiernan deftly combines a family’s struggle with faith, relationships, and severe food allergies to weave a gripping story that stands to be the author’s break-through book.
This comes on the heels of Kiernan’s highly acclaimed debut novel CATCHING GENIUS, a compelling story of two sisters coming to grips with their mutual past.
Both books revolve around topical issues and the challenges of family. “The situations I put my characters in might not happen every day to every family, but they happen every day to some family, and that fascinates me,” said Kiernan.
She’s not a doctor or psychologist, but she develops characters and plots with authentic complexities that come together to fit in her storytelling. “When I get asked about MATTERS OF FAITH I know people will want to know if I have college-age kids, or do I not believe in medical intervention, or is my marriage in trouble,” Kiernan said. “My answer to all is no. I don’t have kids, I sure hope someone gives me a blood transfusion if I need one, and my husband is my best friend and soul mate.
“But over the years I’ve studied people,” said Kiernan. “I’ve watched their actions, listened as they talk about handling family situations, relationships, and their take on various subjects…faith, child-rearing, or anything else. All this dovetails with the research I do on the topics themselves. Researching MATTERS OF FAITH was emotionally involving. Just look at the three major topics–marriage, food allergies, and religion–and you understand why.”
Because Kiernan writes about everyday life, she understands that her books aren’t limited to women. “I’ve had many men say they have read my book. When it’s family everyone can relate, everyone has one and they all have a different take on it, so it allows me to examine different sides and emotions.”
Another source of information that helps Kiernan is daily news. “News stories always stick in my head. I often internalize them.”
She weaves it all together for MATTERS OF FAITH…a break-through novel.
